The Tackett family, owners of Heartland Catfish Company, farm 7,200 surface water acres of catfish and 15,000 acres of grain cropland.  Tackett Fish Farm is the largest single grower of farm-raised catfish in the United States.  The roughly 30 million pounds of live fish they supply Heartland represents about 50% of Heartland’s live fish needs.  The other half is supplied by some of the industry’s most respected farmers, carefully selected based on our knowledge of their farm management and procedures to ensure that their fish are of the same quality as the fish grown by Tackett Fish Farm.  Having a strong network of farmers supplying live fish gives us the confidence that we can consistently fill our customers’ orders with superior-quality catfish products.

Quality Control

Temperature is a critical element that Heartland Catfish emphasizes in our efforts to provide our customers with the best catfish.  All of our facilities are designed so that the temperature is constantly monitored and controlled by computer systems.  The chill water tanks, spiral freezers, processing floors, storage freezers, storage coolers, and loading docks all have systems to constantly maintain the proper temperature.  Our sanitation department uses 140°F water from direct-fire water heaters to maintain the cleanest and most sanitary working environment every hour of every day. Computerized systems also help Heartland control product flow throughout the processing line.  These systems monitor, grade and weigh fish individually before and after processing to ensure true net weights and accurate sizing.  Our ability to grade live fish by size allows us to adapt filleting equipment to the size of live fish being received at the plant throughout the day. This ensures smooth, clean cuts that meet our strict quality standards for both appearance and texture of the fish.

Quality Assurance

Heartland Catfish Company operates under a USDC Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HAACP) program that ensures product safety and economic integrity, while making sure product specification parameters are met or exceeded.  Our facilities operate at the highest level of USDC HAACP.  This program results in superior plate counts (bacteria on the fish) versus anyone else’s in the industry.

Our plants are also audited by third-party firms for compliance with Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) standards and requirements.  BAP Standards cover a range of issues such as Product Safety, Economic Integrity, Socioeconomic Responsibility, Workplace Safety, Employee Compensation and Environmental Protection.  Heartland Catfish has the most stringent flavor standards in the industry.  We employ the industry’s most experienced and respected flavor checker to enforce our flavor standards and check each load of fish that arrive at our plant for processing.  This assures our customers a consistent flavor profile throughout the year.

Largest Freezing Capacity in the Industry

Heartland Catfish has the capability to freeze 18,000 pounds of fillets every hour, giving us the flexibility to freeze 100 percent of our production.  This gives us the flexibility to manage our fresh and frozen orders to ensure high order fill rates. Also, our freezing capacity prevents us from keeping fresh fish in ice totes for several days, waiting on an available freezer.  This prevents high bacterial plate counts and inferior flesh texture and appearance.  Heartland Catfish only stores enough fresh fish in ice totes in order to have product to begin running at the start of the next day.  This large freezing ability allows us to adjust our fresh and frozen mix of production in times of high demand for IQF products but low supply of raw materials, resulting in higher fill rates of frozen products for our valued customers.
