American Heart Month: HEARTland Loves Catfish

February is American Heart Month, and what better way to celebrate than with one of the most heart-healthy proteins available—U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish. Catfish is a healthy seafood option suited for a variety of diets, including Mediterranean, gluten-free, pescatarian and low-carb. The versatility and mild flavor of U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish make it perfect for any recipe or palate.

Why American Heart Month Matters

This month brings attention to cardiovascular health, which should be top of mind for Americans of all ages. According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. In 2023, almost one in every four deaths in the United States was caused by heart disease. Additionally, high blood pressure is the leading cause of heart disease, and nearly half of U.S. adults have high blood pressure, putting them at high risk for heart disease or stroke.

Supporting your heart health all starts with your diet. Healthy eating is about your habits over time, not just one meal. Over time, load up on fruits, veggies and whole grains. Choose healthy proteins like beans, nuts, fish, lean meats and low-fat dairy. Cook with heart-healthy oils like olive or canola, cut back on sugar and salt, keep alcohol to a minimum and choose minimally processed foods whenever possible.

Why Catfish is a Heart-Healthy Protein

REDUCE BLOOD PRESSURE

A study conducted by the European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences states adding catfish into your diet can ensure your body is getting essential vitamins, minerals and healthy fats that improve heart health and lower blood pressure. Catfish is also a lean protein that can help maintain healthy muscle functions without adding excess saturated fat that can strain the cardiovascular system.

LOWER CHOLESTEROL

Catfish can also help lower cholesterol. According to the CDC, cholesterol uses two types of proteins known as high-density lipoproteins and low-density lipoproteins to travel through the bloodstream. High-density proteins are referred to as the “good” type of cholesterol and help absorb cholesterol to carry it to the liver, while low-density lipoproteins do the opposite and raise your risk for heart disease. Too many low-density lipoproteins can create build-up on the walls of blood vessels and lead to heart complications.

ABUNDANCE OF VITAMINS, MINERALS AND HEALTHY FATS

U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish has a multitude of daily recommended vitamins and minerals that are needed to support your body, such as vitamins B-12, omega-3 and omega-6. Vitamin B-12 is highly recommended because it supports the functionality of red blood cells and a strong immune system. Omega-3 and Omega-6 are healthy fatty acids that support heart health. Catfish is also low in mercury, making it a safe option for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Low-mercury seafood supplies a great source of protein, iron and zinc. You can learn more about mercury levels in catfish from our blog.
